Success is something you have to want so badly, that nothing will stand in your way. Some of the most powerful motivators are intrinsic motivators. Whether you want to succeed in certain areas of your personal life, physical appearance, or career, you have to set yourself accountable.

You have to want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe.

There are always ways to make opportunities into reality. You just have to want it bad enough.

How Do High Achievers Think?

Research Shows the Highest Achievers All Share Certain Beliefs

As we’ve said before, emotion is the foundation of all motivation. Thus, it comes as no surprise that belief systems play an important role in motivation.

A recent article in Psychology Today delves into the topic of motivational factors and success. The article digs deeper into a question all of us have been dying to know: “How do high achievers really think?”

Research shows that high achievers are often marked by a strong motive to achieve. Less accomplished individuals are often more motivated to avoid failure.

This distinction is really important, and makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Achievement-motivated individuals have a strong desire to accomplish something important. They are up for the challenge when it comes to tackling demanding tasks, and receive great gratification upon completing high-leverage tasks. They are willing to spend a lot of time and effort in pursuit of these goals.

Failure-avoiding individuals are more focused on protecting themselves from the embarrassment and sense of incompetence that comes with failing at a valued task. As a result, they are less likely to attempt achievement-oriented tasks, and may give up quickly if they realize success won’t be easy to attain.

Of course, these are two very different sides of the spectrum. Achievement motivation vs. failure avoidance motivation exists on a continuum, with most of us falling somewhere in the middle.

So what does that mean for us?

There are certain core beliefs that all high achievers possess. By adopting these beliefs, you can set yourself up for success.

1. Success is your personal responsibility

High achievers tend to believe that initiative, effort, and persistence are key determinants of success at demanding tasks. They attribute success to their personal efforts. On the other end, failure-avoiding individuals are more likely to view success as dependent on extrinsic factors, such as available resources and situational constraints (e.g. the task is too hard, or the marker was biased).

2. Demanding tasks are opportunities

Achievement-motivated individuals tend to see demanding tasks as “opportunities.” Failure avoiding individuals are more likely to see them as ‘threats’ that may lead to the embarrassment of failure.

3. Achievement striving is enjoyable

Achievement-motivated individuals associate effort on demanding tasks with dedication, concentration, commitment and involvement. Failure-avoiding individuals categorize such effort as overloading or stressful. They don’t see a point in persevering in the face of setbacks and obstacles. If success isn’t imminent, then they don’t see much value in sticking with it.

4. Achievement striving is valuable

High achievers value hard work in and of itself. Failure-avoiding individuals may mock achievement striving as uncool. They may associate achievement striving with lack of a social life. High achievers know that success is cool, and can achieved with a social life. High achievers also surround themselves with other high achievers.

5. Skills can be improved

Achievement-motivated individuals have a strong belief that they can improve their performance on demanding tasks with practice, training, coaching, and dedication to learning. After all, becoming an expert in a field takes hours of practice and dedication. Knowledge is dynamic, and learning new things every day is essential to success. Failure-avoiding individuals tend to see skills as fixed and/or dependent on innate talents.

6. Persistence works

Achievement-motivated individuals believe that continued effort and commitment will overcome initial obstacles or failures. Failure-avoiding individuals see initial failure as a sign of things to come, and consequently “quit while they’re ahead.”

These are the secrets to success found in empirical research. Motivation is one of the most widely researched yet largely misunderstood and underpracticed topics today.

If you want to really crush it, take a step back and examine your beliefs. Crushers believe that success can be achieved with dedication, a can-do attitude, and an intense desire to optimize their life in every aspect.
